Today, globalization has made world a smaller and compact place and hence, for the business communities the boundaries stretched by different countries has no meaning. Organizations of all sizes, creed and class are trying to seed their business trees across the globe and this is only possible, if you are able to connect, provide and maintain your company, products and skills to people in the best possible way, instantly and correctly.
In today’s era, the availability and accessibility of information at your desktop is the key to success of your business and organization. Any piece of information or data available in analog or paper format cannot be made available at the same time to people at different places internally or to your vendors or customers externally. Hence, just to make the information available accurately and instantly, one has to make this information and data storable in computer systems and then integrating this data to various offices internally and also the right type of data available for external world. Which piece of confidential data should be available to your internal employees, which data is viewable by your vendors and which information is usable for customers, researchers or external world is only possible by converting your analog or paper into digital formats but in rightful manner.
Today Digitization is taken by world in different ways and carries various meanings but the end result or the output expected all type of users is same.
As per Harvard law library, digitization refers to the process of taking a physical item and making a digital copy of it.
Globally, there are different ways of defining digitization and some of the better ones are listed below:
It’s originated as process of converting paper and other media in existing forms to digital form
It is also referred as the process of translating a piece of information such as a sound recording, picture, books, papers or videos into bits format...
Some says, Process of conversion of an analog video / audio signal to digital form of data for the purpose of computer storage and manipulation.
As per document or diagnostic imaging technology, digitization is the process of capturing analog document as a collection of binary digits (pixels) using a scanning device. Digitization is a precondition for electronic storage, such as magnetic storage, storage on optical disk, and character recognition (e.g. ICR, OCR).
It is also conversion of images, characters, or sounds to digital codes in order to make digital information created may be processed or stored by a computer system.
Also, Digitization generally refers to the process of converting data and information (in paper, analog sound tracks, graphics, etc..) into binary coded files for use in computers. Text can be key stroked or OCR'd, graphics are scanned, analog video signals are digitized, sound is sampled and quantized, and so on.
Some of us have made Digitization synonymous with scanning, it is the conversion from printed-paper, film, or some other media, to an electronic form where the page is represented as either black and white dots, or color or grayscale pixels.
Among all these various definitions and terminologies, in very simple and plain words, we would like to summarize and define Digitization as simply – “Conversion of analog information into digital information”
But the job of getting digitized data in rightful and useful format is not as simple as it looks like. Only the right and organized way of doing conversions, creating data and managing data so that it is user friendly and serves the purpose for which it has been created will make the DIGITIZATION successful.
